Make the Golden (Rule)
Stop me if I get too preachy, oops
too late. I firmly believe that if we really embodied the Golden
Rule in business we would be unstoppable. It seems like all of the
corporate psychobabble that gets dispensed tries to create the same
type of message, but with millions of dollars and endless empty
words (read policies). I have yet to find anything that puts it
so succinctly and honestly.
It seems to me that if you focus on treating
others how you want to be treated, good will come of it. When you
go to work each day what do you think of? Is if getting ahead at
any cost? Is it helping your teammates and clients?
I have been accused of saying "Life is
one big circle" many times. Every day I become more convinced
that we get back what we give off. Be it a smile, holding the door
for someone, sending a heartfelt note to someone who needs it, on
some level it all comes back around the circle. Sometimes it closes
the loop nicely and others times, if the loop was started with a
bad deed, I am convinced that as the circle comes around it will
kick you in the butt! How many times have you heard "Old so
and so really got what was coming to him!"
Now this concept may be hard to grasp. If
you're reading this you are probably a hard charging "A"
that thinks the universe revolves around you (if not, ask your spouse
or sibling, that will be reality). To think that the earth, and
those on her, has a different orbit is tantamount to heresy, right?
Start TRYING to think outward, not inward. The orbit of others is
much bigger than the orbit of you. It is something I have
to work on daily.
My point is this- positive, productive energy
creates good. Focus on being a good person first and true success
will follow. Don't look for, nor expect, the immediate gain. Life
is a marathon and those that work it like a 100yard dash will burn
out like a comet.
