Selling and Sleeping at Night
How many times have you laid awake
at night wondering if what you said during a presentation was the
whole truth and nothing but the truth? How many times have you gotten
a cross-eyed look from a colleague during a meeting that said: "Where
the heck did that come from? We can't possible deliver on that promise."
We all have gotten caught up in the moment,
whether selling a potential client or selling ourselves to a promising
candidate for a date. Did someone ever say to you "It was just
a little white lie?" I'm still trying to comprehend what the
difference is between that and a real lie.
A new survey stated that 58% of people ADMITTED
cheating on their expense reports (Sales and Marketing Management
magazine). I wonder what the real number was? How many times have
you heard someone say- "Oh, they're just a salesperson, you
can't believe anything they say?"
Do we, as sales professionals come off this
way? Are we contributing to the broad brushstroke generalities we
are saddled with?
If so, it's time to change. The fact is we
need to raise ourselves to another level. The yardstick I always
hold myself up to is- could I explain why I just said what I did
to my children? The next time you are tempted to "stretch the
truth," think of the person you would hurt the most if you
lied. With that angel on your shoulder I guarantee that you will
sleep better at night!
